Projects - Underground Storage Tank Removal

Underground Storage Tank Removal - DuncansWEM has overseen the closure of three (3) petroleum USTs from a two abutting commercial properties near downtown Burlington.  After petroleum contamination was observed during the 2003 removal of a 2,000-gallon fuel oil UST on one property, the source of petroleum was traced to the upgradient gas station.  In 2005, two (2) 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were removed from the auto maintenance operation.  Since then, there have been several mobilizations to characterize the extent of groundwater and soil contamination, including the drilling of 26 soil borings and 16 monitoring wells, and 1 free product recovery well.  The areal extent of detectable gasoline contamination is approximately 17,000 ft2.  The vertical extent of gasoline contamination is up to 17 ft deep, but tapers off significantly in the clay soil below 12 ft.  WEM has developed a corrective action plan that involves excavation of approximately 350 cubic yards of contaminated soil for offsite disposal.
