WEM worked with a private client who owned an abandoned industrial site in Colchester, Vermont that was slated to be developed into residential housing. After a series of Phase II level investiations, WEM was able to rule out impacts to groundwater but determined that there was a distinct body of soil behind the building that was contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Qualitative risk assessment indicated that the soil posed a risk to the future residential use. WEM worked with the VT DEC, the VT Department of Health, and the client to develop a corrective action plan. The cleanup, which entailed the excavation of 500 tons of soil and offsite disposal at a municipal landfill, resulted in formal closure of the site.
